Henri Matisse’s codfish paste and devil’s potatoes

Jacqueline Duhême was barely 20 when she went to work as assistant to the painter Henri Matisse in 1947. Surgery for abdominal cancer in 1941 had left the artist, then approaching 80, mostly confined to his bed or a wheelchair, but he continued to paint, making use of his immobility to experiment with cutout shapes in colored paper which he incorporated into vivid collages. At the same time, he was completing his last major work, the decoration of the Chapel of the Rosary in the Provençal village of Vence. (Duhême’s first job was to pose for the figure of a nun in one of his murals.)
